The Saints offense, already short on running backs heading into the 2010 season, lost Reggie Bush on Monday night for what could be six weeks at least.
Bush broke a bone in his lower leg after recovering a muffed punt against the 49ers. Had Bush caught the ball cleanly, the Saints and fantasy owners would not be without Bush's services for the next month-and-a-half.
With Bush out, Pierre Thomas gets a huge boost in fantasy value. There is not another Bush on this team, meaning Thomas will replace him in a lot of the packages the Saints designed for the versatile Bush. Much to Thomas fantasy owners' chagrin, Bush also saw a lot of work in the red zone.
However, fantasy owners will have to compete with 2010 preseason hero Chris Ivory. In four preseason games, Ivory amassed 222 total yards of offense (although his receiving yards—76— came on one play) with two touchdowns. He certainly is no Bush. Ivory is built more for short-yardage situations than anything else.
That is the bad news for Thomas owners.
The good news is that Ivory is completely unproven. He did get injured in the fourth preseason game and was expected to miss three weeks with that injury, but that time frame now has elapsed and he could see action this weekend against Atlanta.
If you have room on your roster to stash a player, Ivory should clear waivers in your leagues this week. He would not be a bad speculative pick-up.

Here are today's great reads:
- Andre Johnson obviously is owned in every single fantasy football league. If there is a league he is not owned in and you play in it, please invite me next year. The other two Texans receivers, however, may not be owned in your league. Kevin Walter and Jacoby Jones both had huge Week 2's against Washington, showing just how powerful that Houston passing game can be from a fantasy football perspective. [FantasyOMatic]
- Let the fun times begin in Philly. The whole Kevin Kolb-Michael Vick quarterback controversy could get really, really messy during a home game if Kolb starts to struggle. Expect much jeering and booing from the Eagles faithful if Andy Reid does not go to the bullpen for Vick. [Fantasy Knuckleheads]
- Jimmy Clausen being named the starting quarterback in Carolina just two weeks into the regular season is bad news for Steve Smith owners. This cannot end well for the Panthers this year, right? What do you do with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart now? Surely the Panthers will try to lean on their running game and defense. [Roto Arcade]
