Despite a 2-1 loss to Sweden on Tuesday Canada advanced to the quarter finals of Women's soccer. Melissa Tancredi scored the lone Canadian goal with a beautiful diving header.
Canada was already through before the game had begun thanks to a 1-0 victory by Germany over North Korea. Canada heads into the quarter finals with a record of 1-1-1 as they prepare to face the top ranked Americans on Friday in Shanghai.
While advancing was a big achievement the women did have an opportunity to get a more favorable draw for they quarter final match. After defeating Argentina, and drawing with China had an opportunity to potentially win the group, but instead seemed rather content with qualification already assured.
The match Tuesday was a very spirited affair where Canada once again squandered several chances to score but also gave up several chances to the third ranked Swedes. While the Canadians did not look all that bad, they appeared to be caught short at the back on several occasions and if not for some great saves by keeper Erin Mcleod the outcome could have been worse.
Canada now has they're work cut out for them as they face the number one team in women's soccer and the defending gold medalists. They will hope for a nice break in the weather come Thursday as the smog and humidity in China appears to have taken a toll on this team.
Look for Canada to pull out all the stops on Friday in what could be coach Evan Pellerud's last game as coach. They will have to be at they're absolute best to have any hope of upsetting the heavily favoured US team.
