Manchester United seem to be on the verge of signing Dimitar Berbatov for a price approaching £30 million. He will definitely score goals for us and will provide us with an out-and-out striking option.

But I don't think he is what United really need. Ajax's Klaas-Jan Huntelaar would be a better option. He may not score as many goals as Berbatov would initially, but he won't mind sitting on the bench sometimes—something I'm sure Berbatov would not like.

Also, having just turned 24, he is a good long-term signing. Tottenham's Bulgarian striker is 28.

Berbatov has scored 46 times in 101 appearances for Spurs, while Huntelaar has found the net 96 times in 115 appearances for Ajax.

Agreed, the Premier League is far more difficult to score in than the Dutch League, but scoring at the rate of 0.83 goals per game is no easy task.

Additionally, Huntelaar is not temperamental (unlike the Bulgarian) and so would fit in with our young squad more comfortably.

Another Dutchman, Ruud van Nistelrooy, scored 62 goals in 67 games for PSV before coming to United, and he was a great signing. There is no reason to believe that Huntelaar cannot match, or maybe even surpass, his scoring record at United.
