QB David Garrard had a strong season debut and hopes he was able to silence critics who said he wasn’t the right man for the starting job. He completed 16-of-21 passes for 170 yards and three scores. RB Maurice Jones-Drew did his part by pacing the ground game coming up just short of 100 yards with 98, he also snagged three passes. WR’s Mike Thomas and Kassim Osgood combined for seven catches, 113 yards and one TD. TE Marcedes Lewis added two TD grabs. The Jags defense was productive with three sacks, one fumble recovery and an INT.
San Diego comes home after being upset by the Chiefs 21-14 in a hard fought defensive battle on Monday night. QB Phillip Rivers had a decent game going 22-for-39 through the air with 298 yards and two TD’s. Rookie RB Ryan Mathews wishes he had a better NFL debut running for 75 yards, while also coughed the pigskin once. WR Legedu Naanee hauled in five grabs for 110 yards and a score, while Pro Bowl TE Antonio Gates added five catches of his own for 76 yards to go along with a TD grab.
Despite last week’s win, Jacksonville has been atrocious against the closing NFL odds covering just 10 of its L/33 attempts. When in the role of the underdog during that stretch, the Jags have won outright only seven of their L/19 tries while posting an 8-11 ATS tally. They’ve fared well against AFC West opponents of late going 3-0 SU & 2-1 ATS. When favored in the L/2 seasons the Chargers have gone 17-10 SU, but have only covered 10 of their L/26 tries ATS. Off a division game since 2008, the Chargers are 9-3 SU & 7-5 ATS.
