About two weeks ago, Jim Boeheim's Syracuse team was outplayed in the second half against a sleeper UMass team out of the Atlantic 10. UMass came out of the gate in the first half firing away and hitting from three but they saw their early commanding lead slip away quickly as the Orange headed into the Carrier Dome locker room at half time with the lead.
This up-and-coming Massachusettes team was given a pep talk at half time and it showed as they displayed excellence on the court throughout the second half to make a late comeback and fend off four 20-point scorers, led by Eric Devendorf's 23,for Syracuse, to defeat the Orange on their home court. Boeheim and his coaching staff were able to somewhat correct the process of defending the three as the Orange came away with a home win against the Tulane Green Wave, and then traveled to Virginia to upstage and defeat the Cavaliers and All-American candidate Sean Singletary.
This past Saturday the Rhode Island Rams came onto campus in the bitter cold town of Syracuse, and made it a fact that Boeheim's crew has trouble against
Atlantic 10 teams. The Rams, just like the Massachusettes Minutemen did a week ago, were draining the basketball from behind the arc, burying three after three. Once again Syracuse lead after 20 minutes of play, but the opponent outplayed the Orange for the second 20 minutes. A strong 12-18 (67%) effort from three point range was able to propel the Rams to a two-point victory over the Orange yet again on their home court. Six double-digit scorers highlighted by freshman sensation Johnnie Flynn's 23 was not enough to put the Orange on top.
Whatever it may be, Jim Boeheim must use his coaching expertise to get this talented young squad back on the track they should be on. With two McDonald's
All-American freshman, highflyer Donte Green and playmaker Johnnie Flynn, and a veteran captain in Eric Devendorf, this team should be able to compete with the best in the Big East and we shall see if they can starting in January when conference play begins. The returning players should be hungry for victories after
being snubbed by last year's NCAA Tournament Selection Committee.
