Why Signing Thierry Henry Will Be a Huge Waste Of Money

Alden SingAug 10, 2008

For those regular readers of my articles here, you will know by now that I am a passionate and ardent Arsenal fan. You will also expect that upon reading about Manchester United's interest in Thierry Henry, I would have something to say about it.

Yes. This move to sign Thierry Henry for a grand total of 20 million pounds is seriously going to be a big waste of money.

At 31 years of age, one cannot expect Henry to swagger the way he use to anymore. Henry was plucked out of the wilderness at Juventus and honed to perfection by Arsene Wenger, before he decided to pack up his bags and leave for more sun in Barcelona.

At Barcelona, Henry faltered. He wasn't the brilliant striker that struck fear in the hearts of defenders anymore. He also wasn't the Henry that could stroke the ball into the bottom corner of the net and subsequently place his finger on his lips to silence opposing fans. He wasn't the man to look to as well when you were a goal down.

The magic in him is lost.

Now, Man Utd wants him. For an exorbitant 20 million pounds, Man Utd is paying 4 million pounds more than Barcelona for him. Is he going to be worth it?

Only a reckless manager will risk such a venture. Thierry Henry isn't getting any younger anymore. He struggled immensely at Barcelona last season. He made a total of 47 appearances for Barcelona but he only contributed a paltry 19 goals. Compare this form with that of 2003-2006 at Arsenal and you will realize how Henry is declining as a footballer.

Shockingly, Sir Alex Ferguson has somehow missed these vital statistics. Henry as a solution to Man Utd's striking woes? Let's just say it is wishful thinking.

Henry is not a solution to Man Utd's striking problems. After throwing an injury prone Louis Saha out of their plans, the last thing they need now is another injury prone, aging striker to add to their physio's work at the treatment room.

For 20 million pounds, Ferguson can bring in someone more decent.

After contemplating Berbatov, Huntelaar and the likes for an opportunity to spearhead Man Utd's attack, the signing of Henry will make Ferguson the butt of all jokes at Arsenal.
