Each week we will look at some waiver wire pickups you should be making in your leagues. Here they are for week 1.
Michael Vick (Available in 87% of Yahoo Leagues)-I personally attended the Eagles/Packers opening day game. It was a tremendous thrill. I thought though we were going to see the beginning of the Kevin Kolb era in Philly. Kolb received a thunderous ovation when his name was announced as starting quarterback during the pre game player introductions. What we actually witnessed was a different sort of animal. Jzak and I commented that it appeared we actually had seen the first QBBC going in the first half. Vick seemed to find his way onto the field in every series in the first half even when Kolb played. Kolb was very ineffective and did not seem to have command of the team while he was at QB. Then towards the end of the first half came the big blow. Kolb went out with a concussion and was lost for the game. We have now come to learn that Kolb has failed his first battery of concussion tests and appears unlikely to play versus Detroit next week. Enter Michael Vick. He was vintage Vick throughout the game making some spectacular runs and completed some short easy passes. Vick finished the day 16 of 24 passing for 175 yards and a touchdown. He also added 103 yards on the ground on 11 totes. Not a bad afternoon considering he didn't even start the game. Not to mention the offense also seemed to move the football much more efficiently with Vick under center. I know Andy Reid has said that Kevin Kolb will be his man once he is healthy. One has to wonder what happens if Vick comes out with a nice effort against Detroit next week.
Jimmy Clausen(Available in 99% of Yahoo Leagues) - Clausen is another that may get a Week 2 opportunity due to concussion concerns with Matt Moore. Moore is firmly entrenched as the starter here though and Clausen only figures to fill in only if Moore can't go. Watch the injury reports this week before adding Clausen to your roster.
Peyton Hillis(Available in 95% of Yahoo Leagues)- Hillis split carries right down the middle with Jerome Harrison in Week 1. Plus Hillis also received the all important red zone carries. Hillis finished the day with nine rushes for 41 yards and a touchdown and added four receptions for 24 yards. Definitely appears to be part of an RBBC in Cleveland and should be a must add for Harrison owners at the very least.
Brandon Jackson(Available in 88% of Yahoo Leagues)- Jackson filled in admirably well for the Packers this week when Ryan Grant went down with an ankle injury. Grant has already been ruled out for the Buffalo game next week. You have to like Jackson's chances against a porous Buffalo run defense next week.
Mark Clayton(Available in 90% of Yahoo Leagues)- Everyone was wondering what receiver would establish himself as the go to guy in Saint Louis. It appears Week 1 it was Mark Clayton. He posted 10 receptions in the game for 119 yards. We shouldn't have been surprised by this. After all Clayton and Bradford both played for the Oklahoma Sooners. I wonder if there is any connection because of that? Certainly may not be outside of the realm of possibility.
Jordan Shipley(Available in 96% of Yahoo Leagues)- This is more of a waiver wire pickup in terms of a dynasty league. Jordan Shipley posted some nice opening day numbers of five receptions for 82 yards. Not a bad outing when TO and Ocho stole the main part of the passing show. Shipley will be next in line when Ocho and TO are out of the mix. He could turn out to be a PPR monster much like Wes Welker has.
Tony Scheffler(Available in 95% of Yahoo Leagues)- Scheffler had a decent game in week 1 posting six receptions for 43 yards. He seems to be integrating himself as an important part of the offense. He could be a good pickup especially when Stafford is healthy again.
Bo Scaife(Available in 96% of Yahoo Leagues)- Scaife had an ok Week 1 performance posting three receptions for 37 yards and a touchdown. He played well last year after Vince Young took over at quarterback. They seemed to have developed some connection. If you need a bye week fill in for the upcoming weeks, Scaife isn't a bad option.
Carolina Panthers(Available in 87% of Yahoo Leagues) - Each week I will present one fairly readily available waiver defense for you to use as a plug and play option. In week 2 the Panthers battle Tampa Bay and will be looking for redemption after taking a beating at the hands of the Giants last week. All they have to do is stop Cadillac and Mike Williams and the game is theirs. Shouldn't be a tough task.
