I must admit with the 2008 Olympics beginning this past Friday, work somewhat hindered me from taking the time to watch.
Now with a few days into the Beijing Olympics, I must ask the question, "Is Anyone Watching?"
In years past I felt a certain obligation to watch the Olympics purely from the mentality that my country is participating, and lets see who comes out on top. Now, if I were to watch the Olympics, it's purely from a sporting aspect.
Please don't misunderstand this as no self-pride in my own country. I simply mean that interests in the Games have plummeted in my heart for some reason. I still enjoy them, but to be honest, I couldn't even tell you at this moment what channel it would be on for my own local area!
Of course, this lack of interest of watching the Olympics may also have come about from four years of growth. The last time I watched the Olympics, I may have not even been old enough to have a job. Now, my job takes up 90% of my time, and it is not fun. I much rather be watching the Olympics than working. That much is true.
I pose this question because I would like to know what others are thinking of this subject. Is it just me that isn't watching? Could it be that I don't dedicate enough time to the rare event? Or is it that the Olympics just are not as important to society as it used to be? I will ponder this, while I let you folks comment. Please do.
