Cubs Recap: Both Chicago Teams Lose, One More Fortunate
Both Chicago teams are on home-stands right now. While both teams won and Friday, then both lost on Saturday, I'd say one team is breathing a little easier.
Carlos Zambrano was looking for his 13th win, and 7th win at Wrigley where he'd gone a perfect 6-0 up until today. In fact, it was probably the worst outing of his career. By the top of the fourth, Big Z had given up three homers. The last time he had given up three homers was in the National League Championship Series in 2003.
That third homer Zambrano gave up was to the batter who had fared the worst against the Cubs this season, Troy Glaus, who up until his second at bat against Zambrano had been hit-less in THIRTY previous at bats against the '08 Cubs.
Zambrano's one bright spot, hitting a solo homer in the bottom of the third to put the Cubs within one, but after just four and one third innings, he was taken out of the game.
The Cubs truly didn't have any other real chances to get back in the ball game. They dropped game 2 of a three game series against St. Louis letting the Cards get even at one game apiece for each team.
Going south on the Red Line, Boston was in town to continue their four game series with the South Siders.
Jose Contreras started the game for the White Sox, and like Zambrano didn't last long, but the reason he left the game early wasn't for pitching poorly.
Contreras went to cover first on a grounder and fell to the ground in pain, banging his fist against the ground. He had ruptured his left Achilles tendon and will be unavailable to pitch for at least the next nine months, most of what's being said, even a full year.
Boston out pitched and outhit the White Sox and won the game 6-2. Later Saturday night, Minnesota won their game, sending the Sox back to a half game back. Without a solid five man rotation, it's going to take nothing short of a miracle for the South Siders to: A. Make it to the playoffs, and B. Do WELL in the playoffs.
The Cubs on the other hand now are only four up on the suddenly hot again Brewers, but you have to feel a lot more comfortable with that lead than having to play from behind like the ChiSox are going to have to do.
