The Philadelphia Eagles host the Green Bay Packers Sunday to kick off Week 1 of the 2010 season. This intriguing match-up features two quarterbacks who have taken similar paths to become the unquestioned starters on their teams. Aaron Rodgers replaced the legendary Brett Favre in 2008, and Kevin Kolb is now replacing Donovan McNabb, whose successful career in Philadelphia ended without a championship.
Looking at the NFL spreads this week, we find the Packers with a -3 edge over Philadelphia and a total set of 47.5 points. So clearly the books feel that Kolb may struggle in his debut, and that Rodgers and the Packers should pick up where they left off last season.
With Rodgers' command of the offense and a underrated defense, the Packers are considered one of the NFC's few Super Bowl contenders. The former first round-pick hasn’t missed a beat this preseason, completing 77.4 percent of his passes for 406 yards, six touchdowns and only one interception.
Due to injuries along the offensive line, Rodgers was sacked 50 times in 2009. He still managed to throw for 4,434 yards, 30 touchdowns and just seven interceptions, six fewer than in 2008.
His top targets, receivers Donald Driver and Greg Jennings, haved topped the 1,000-yard receiving plateau over the past two seasons. With a healthy O-line and RB Ryan Grant, who rushed for 1,200-plus yards in consecutive seasons, Rodgers should feel less pressure and produce similar numbers to last season.
Kolb, the Eagles' second round pick in 2007, also watched from the sidelines for three years before getting his opportunity this season. In two replacement starts, he threw for more than 300 yards and two touchdowns last season. Those performances probably influenced the franchise to send McNabb to the Redskins after 11 seasons.
Kolb has plenty of weapons on offense to make the transition a lot smoother: Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson, the up-and-coming Jeremy Maclin and the underrated Brent Celek at tight end. Celek led the team with 76 grabs for 971 yards last year and will provide another quality passing option. RB LeSean McCoy performed beyond expectations in 2009, and with Brian Westbrook gone, he has more chances to show his talents.
For more NFL picks from an expert you can count on, turn to Jack Jones who enters Week 1 on a 39-20 (66%) run dating back to last season. He will be releasing a play in this game Sunday afternoon.
