Oregon at Tennessee: Ducks Will Take Down Vols in Knoxville

The No. 7 Oregon Ducks will get their first road test of the season, as they are set to take on the Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday in Week 2 of college football action.
The Ducks crushed New Mexico 72-0 to open the season, while the Volunteers pitched their first shutout in seven years on their way to a 50-0 win over Tennessee-Martin. Looking at the college football odds for this game, the oddsmakers currently have Oregon as 13-point favorites over Tennessee on the road.
Oregon racked up 720 yards of total offense against New Mexico in their win, and really look like the team to beat out of the Pac-10 this season.
The Ducks didn’t seem to miss a beat without quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, as sophomore Darron Thomas completed 13 of 23 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks were also without starting running back LaMichael James in this one, but that didn’t matter either, as backup Kenjon Barner exploded for five touchdowns against New Mexico.
Barner ran the ball 17 times for 147 yards and four touchdowns, and also took a screen pass 60 yards for a score. It will be interesting to see how many touches Barner gets with James expected to be back in action this week.
Tennessee got a strong showing out of new starting quarterback Matt Simms, as he threw for 181 yards and a touchdown on 14 of 24 passing. Simms connected with senior Gerald Jones six times for a team best 86 yards, and was able to find fellow senior Denarius Moore four times for 66 yards and a score.
The Volunteers also got a strong performance out of junior running back Tauren Poole, as he carried the ball 17 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns. While the shutout was impressive, don’t read too much into how the defense played against Tennessee-Martin.
Looking at the Odds: This is the first meeting between the two schools. The Ducks haven’t had a whole lot of success against the SEC of late, as they are just 3-4 in their last seven. Tennessee hasn’t had much better luck against the Pac-10, as they played UCLA in each of the last two seasons, losing both by a combined seven points.
I personally think you should forget about the struggles Oregon has had against the SEC, as this is one of the best teams they have put on the football field. It should come as no surprise that the Ducks are pretty big favorites on the road against the Volunteers. I think the oddsmakers are actually giving the Vols a little too much credit in this one, as I think Oregon rolls past Tennessee in this one. My final score prediction is Oregon 35, Tennessee 17.
