So the season is upon us and so are the books, but who cares about molecular biology when you're busy stressing over the fact that Maryland just leap-frogged your offensive line and caused a fumble to win the game? Or the fact that UNC just has to catch this one pass to beat LSU without 8 of their defensive starters? Florida State starting a new era, UF getting bullied by Miami(OH), and a top 10 showdown in week 1. Those are just a few of the very interesting story-lines that are happening in college football and in order to keep track of all this epic, I will be doing a weekly column to list the top 25 games of the season. You may agree, you may disagree, but if you do please state why. Obviously in week 1 I'm not going to have too many games to write about but as the season goes on the list will fill in. So here we have it, the top 25 games of the 2010-11 season so far: week 1.
1) Week 1 LSU vs. UNC – 30-24.
This game brought back painful memories of FSU vs. UM when Fortson dropped not only one but two perfect passes in the end-zone that would have won the game for the Seminoles. UNC now knows that pain…or do they? Coming off of recent penalties UNC was without their highly touted starting defense for the most part but still rallied after half-time to close the gap on the 31-10 score they were staring at as they walked off the field. Even though the score says different, I believe if UNC had their starters, they would have won. I’m sure most of the country feels the same way too, even LSU. The ACC definitely earned respect though, and that’s what’s important for college football.
2) Week 1 Boise St. vs. Virginia Tech – 33-30
Well. It was everything that everyone expected -- except for the fact that Boise got off to a 0-17 start. After that it was game on. I will give Boise credit for this win, but I will not give them the credit they think they deserve to be in the BCS title game. Not until they play a full schedule of real games. Yes they make it to good bowl and yes they win, but they make it there with no struggle aside from the 1-3 real games they play. Do it all season, save a few for cupcakes, and then get back to me. I still argue that both Boise and Virginia Tech are overrated.
3) Week 1 Maryland vs. Navy – 17-14
Let’s be honest. Who thought this game was going to be that awesome? Who thought Maryland even had a chance? Who thought that superman over the Navy O-line was one of the coolest things ever? I almost skipped this game but I’m glad I didn’t. Wow. I wasn’t keeping as good of track of the game as I should have been because I was too dumbfounded about how awesome and fun it was to watch. That’s one win for the ACC at least…
4) Week 1 Utah vs. Pitt – 27-24
This game, while not too surprising given Utah’s current 18 home-game winning streak, was considered an upset by many. Pitt, who started the season as the favorite to win the Big East, was a major letdown. Granted the game went into OT and ended by a sloppy pass turned interception the rest of the game was definitely what I, and many, would think of when bulls lock horns. Utah got a tough win and will carry some good stigma with them when they depart for the Pac-10 (Pac-12?)
5) Week 1 Kentucky vs. Louisville – 23-16
Louisville came into this game favored, however slightly, against a Kentucky team that has had trace amounts of highs in the last few years. Ask anyone outside of the Kentucky area what they remember and they’re likely to only remember that horrible moment when Tebow went down…and didn’t get up. The concussion. This game gave Kentucky something to be hopeful about in the 2010-11 season even if they have no chance of making an SEC title any time soon.
6) Week 1 USC vs. Hawai’i – 49-36
O.K. so a traditional powerhouse travels to Hawai’i to enjoy the beach, have a few cocktails, and flirt with some of the locals since they will breeze through this short-lived-once-Cinderella team a quick whooping to head home and get ready for some “real” games, right? WRONG. Hawai’i said “Nope.” While the end of the game was a runaway success for USC who finally was able to pull their game together, Barkley started to control his team, things went as previously expected. Before then, it was like watching Appalachian State beat Michigan all over again.
7) Week 1 Illinois vs. Missouri – 13-23
I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Illinois up 10-0 early on in the game, I had no reason what-so-ever to believe that Missouri would win by anything less than 15 points. Well, slap me and call me Masoli, because I messed up. I couldn’t look away from this game in fear that as soon as I turned my head Illinois would activate their rocket-booster shoes, or go Mutant Football and push a Missouri player into an abyssal hole. This one is definitely a Big 10 classic.
8) Week 1 Jacksonville State vs. Ole Miss – 49-48
9) Week 1 Washington vs. BYU – 17-23
10) Week 1 Oregon State vs. TCU – 21-30
11) Week 1 Tulsa vs. East Carolina – 49-51
12) Week 1 Florida Atlantic vs. UAB – 32-31
13) Week 1 Utah State vs. Oklahoma – 24-31
14) Week 1 Southern Methodist vs. Texas Tech – 27-35
15) Week 1 Minnesota vs. Middle Tenn. State – 24-17
16) Week 1 Northwestern vs. Vanderbilt – 23-21
17) Week 1 Villanova vs. Temple – 24-31
18) Week 1 Florida vs. Miami(OH) – 12-34
19) Week 1 Army vs. Eastern Michigan – 31-37
20) Week 1 Florida State vs. Samford – 59-6
21) Week 1 Notre Dame vs. Purdue – 23-12
22) Week 1 Oklahoma State vs. Washington State – 65-17
23)Week 1 Oregon vs. New Mexico – 72-0
24) Week 1 UConn vs. Michigan – 10-30
25) Week 1 Ohio State vs. Marshall -- 45-7
T-25) Week 1 Miami vs. FAMU -- 45-0
