Brett Favre: Just another drama queen

anonymousAug 7, 2008

Brett Favre is one of the greatest QBs of all time. He still is and will always be a Green Bay Packer. But unfortunately, he, like many great athletes, is all about himself. As a huge Packers fan, I never imagined myself saying this about him. But after the events that have occurred over the recent weeks, Brett Favre is selfish. The past couple of years, Favre has changed his mind again and again about retirement. Then this year he finally decided to hang it up. But then in March, he decided he wanted to get back in the game. Just when the Packers were about to make the announcement, he changed his mind. Then this July, he decided he did actually want to come back. This was much too late. The Packers had already drafted two QBs in Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, and training camp was just weeks away. They could not take him back now, they had already moved on. So Favre decides that the Packers should release him. After refusing his request, Brett Favre showed why he is a selfish athlete. Brett Favre went on Greta Van Susteren and ripped the Packers apart. He criticized Ted Thompson for not making move Favre wanted them to make. He wanted one of the most controversial players in the NFL, who looked like he was on the decline. How was TT supposed to know that Moss was about to have one of the greatest seasons for a WR in NFL history? He also critcized TT for not hiring Steve Mariucci. Guess what Favre, Mike McCarthy worked out pretty good. He has gone 21-11 as the Packers head coach, and is 18-4 in his last 22 games. This team won 4 games the previous season before his hiring. TT should not have to listen to Favre. If he did, they may as well just make Favre the GM. One player should never have any influence over management, no matter who the player is. I can't believe that some writers have actually sided Favre in this situation. Jason Whitlock wrote an article today, and to be honest, it was awful. This is one of the quotes from his article. "Ted Thompson drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005, and a year later while ignoring Favre's calls for Steve Mariucci, he hired McCarthy to lead the Packers." TT didnt think Favre would play so much longer. He had been contemplating retirement for years, so TT thought that 2005 might be his last year. Whitlock also mentions the coaching dispute. It should never be mentioned again. McCarthy has been a brilliant hiring. The Packers couldn't deal with the Favre circus, and decided it was time to move on. They have been preparing for life without Favre for months. You can't just expect them to totally change all their plans and just bring him in again. It's Rodgers time now, and he will have the opportunity to make the best of it. The Packers have not been pressuring him into retirement. It is Brett Favre's desicion, not TT's or anyone elses. He decided to retire, and he made this mess. So in the end, the Packers had to get King Favre out. Its a bad ending to a terrible story, but it's just another superstar athlete who is all about himself.
