In the U.S the Indy scene for pro wrestling is the strongest it has been for a long time. With such great promotions as CHIKARA, Dragon Gate U.S.A, EVOLVE, ROH, SHIMMER, and many others. We can safely say that wrestling fans have a lot of options to pick from.
There is one thing that has been bothering me as of late though. It seems to me that one of the largest producers of talent for the last 20 years has been vastly over looked. The promotion I am referring to is none other than the NWA.
I say this for a couple of different reasons. If you cruise the net for Indy news you will find more news and hype on just about any other promotion but the NWA. Also, if you look at some of the major web sites like the Observer or Torch. You will rarely see any news regarding this great but over looked promotion.
How has this come to be? The NWA is represented in over half the country. It is represented in places like Canada, The UK, France. You would think a promotion with such reach would garnish a bit more attentions from the fans.
Yet it seems that the only Indy promotions you hear talked about are the trendy promotions like ROH, CHIKARA, and Dragon Gate U.S.A. Don’t get me wrong folks, I think it’s great that we have interests in these other promotions. They are doing a great job keeping the Indy scene going strong.
The only thing that bothers me is the lack of respect the NWA gets. Some fans may not realize it, but it is the NWA that has produced a majority of the talent scene in the U.S. let’s forget the fact the NWA has given us such greats as Sting, Arn Anderson, The Steiners, and many other legends.
Just look at today’s stars that people have grown to love. It may surprise you to know that stars like AJ Styles, the Hardy Boyz, Chris Jericho, and many others all came out of the NWA pipeline at some point. While they may not have become stars while in the NWA, it can certainly be argued that the NWA helped push these guys in the right direction.
If you look at today’s top Indy stars, just about all of them have NWA blood in them. Adam Pearce is currently the NWA heavyweight champion.
Mike Quackenbush is their current Junior Heavyweight champ. MsChif, Arguably SHIMMER’s top star, held the women’s title for over 800 days. Here is a little fun fact. Blue demon Jr during his five hundred plus days as champ, would wrestle in front of crowds as large as 10,000 people.
That isn’t too shabby considering the NWA is an Indy promotion. I would like to see EVOLVE or CHIKARA put up those kinds of numbers. Somehow I don’t think we will ever see that happen though. Yet all we ever hear about are the other promotions.
Here are some staggering numbers to take into consideration. Thousands of people attended the recent NWA Legends Fanfest. With tickets going for 150 bucks a pop, I would say those are pretty solid numbers for an Indy event.
Let’s talk TV shall we. The NWA can be seen on TV all over the country. Yet the only promotion we ever here about that’s on TV is ROH. It just goes to show you how little respect the NWA gets from the mainstream wrestling media.
As you can probably tell I am big NWA mark. It is a great organization that has been the back bone of wrestling since the late ‘40s. All I am asking is that it gets its proper dues with the other great Indy promotions.
Sadly this may never happen, but at least I can say that I am a true fan that knows the real roots of wrestling.
