In one of the most horrific crashes at Pocono Raceway, Frank Kimmel, champion and stalwart in the ARCA REMAX racing series, suffered a concussion. He will step out of the car in the Nashville race this weekend.
Kimmel's crash occurred on lap 68 of the Pocono race. The crash involved three cars—the No. 25 of Brian Scott, the No. 37 of Dexter Bean, and the No. 44 of Frank Kimmel, former series champion. All three cars were heavily damaged and the race was red flagged for the clean up.
At first, Kimmel did not respond to the repeated radio requests of his crew chief and brother. It was suspected that he had lost consciousness for a brief period of time.
All three drivers then managed to get out of their cars under their own power, but Kimmel was later transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. It was determined after tests there that Kimmel did indeed suffer a mild concussion.
Kimmel says that he really does not even remember the crash and only vaguely remembers getting out of the car and then being transported to the hospital. He credits the safer cars and tracks with the fact that he was able to remain relatively unscathed during this crash, the consequences of which could have been much more serious.
But with the number of races—and concussions—under his belt, doctors have advised him to leave the racing to someone else this weekend. Stepping in will most likely be Will Kimmel, Frank's nephew. Frank Kimmel intends to start the race and then step out for his nephew at the first caution.
All ARCA fans, including one of Kimmel's most ardent fans, up and comer Scott Speed, wish Frank a quick recovery and look forward to seeing him participate fully in his next ARCA race.
