Earlier this week, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan stated that Ed Reed would play in the Ravens' season opener against the Jets.

Coach Ryan's crystal ball must be cracked or cloudy, as the Ravens announced the Pro Bowl safety would start the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list.

What this means, besides the fact that the Ravens world does not revolve around coach Ryan, is Reed will miss at least the first six games of the upcoming NFL season.

Reed had surgery in the offseason to repair a damaged hip. Shortly after the surgery was performed, there was hope that Reed would be ready for the Sept. 13 opener. 

Reed turned some heads later in the summer when he said, "Honestly, I shouldn't even be playing this year."

When that statement was revealed, doubts were raised that Reed would ever suit up for the Ravens again.  

Those doubts may continue to linger.

Placing a player on the reserve/PUP list does not guarantee that they will return to the team's active roster. Once the player is on the reserve/PUP list, they must sit the first six weeks of the season.

After the six weeks expires, a 21-day window opens where the player can practice with the team. During that 21-day window, a decision must be made to wither activate the player or place them on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Reed has had a tumultuous offseason, and placing him on the PUP list does not truly clear things up. It just gives everyone six more weeks to speculate on the future of Ed Reed.
