The Ole Miss Rebels open their 2010 football season Saturday against Jacksonville State. Fall is in the air and Rebel fans will be pumped up to see how Nathan Stanley and Jeremiah Masoli look on the field. But what will Saturday's game really reveal about the Rebels?
For starters, fans will get the first look at Jeremiah Masoli. Look for Masoli to make some big plays against Jacksonville, even if he doesn't have the entire system down yet. Starting the season against Jacksonville will give both Masoli and Stanley a showcase to show what they can do on the field. But don't expect either QB to secure the starting position on Saturday. Both should have a great day!
Ole Miss should have no problems at quarterback, but do they have the needed talent at wide receiver? This game should reveal which receivers can get the job done. The Rebel QB's should have time to throw all over the field, so we will find out if the receivers can hold up their end of things.
Ole Miss fans will learn more about their offense line than their QB situation on Saturday. The young Rebel offensive line needs a few games under their belt to gel. Jacksonville State is just the ticket. If the O-line has a hard time with the Jacksonville defense, this could be an ugly season indeed!
Another thing that Rebel fans may learn is whether or not the Rebels have a standout running back. The Rebels have several good backs, but which will step up and standout? Who will be the next McCluster?
Rebel fans will not learn much about the defense, as the Rebel defense should dominate. If Jacksonville racks up many yards in the air, that will raise panic among the Rebel faithful. Don't look for the Gamecocks to test the young defensive backfield, but if it happens, that is not a good sign.
The Rebels should dominate this game in every way. Anything else is going to be cause for alarm among Ole Miss fans. It doesn't get any easier than this for an opening weekend. Hopefully Houston Nutt will take advantage of this game and begin to work out the kinks before the real competition starts.
