I normally don't write about football, let alone the greatest quarterback of all-time. However, after following what ESPN is calling "the Brett Favre saga", I've decided to weigh in on the subject.

The Packers were extremely close to making it to the Super Bowl last January. This fact needs to be sent to Packers' GM Ted Thompson right now. I can remember that game clearly, and it all came down to Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes. Tynes attempted but missed what might have been a game winning 36 yard field goal with 2:15 to go in the 4th quarter. In OT, the famous "interception" took place when Favre did a short right pass to the intended Donald Driver. Instead, Corey Webster decided to wear the sticky hands. Webster snatched the ball and the rest was history. Eli Manning made an incomplete pass to Steve Smith thus pushing the Giants' drive to 4th and 5. With 12:34 to go in OT, Lawrence Tynes drained a 47 yard field goal and the Giants went to and won the Super Bowl.

I always felt that Green Bay was the better team, but if you believe in destiny, it was the Giants' time. Favre was so close to the Super Bowl and it killed him. In an emotional state of mind following the season, Favre made an irrational decision to leave the game. Luckily, he started to see it my way. Now Favre wants to get back into the league and relive the glory while sporting the green and yellow...and why shouldn't he? The Packers are young with a lot of potential, they're healthy, they good a good head coach in Mike McCarthy, and the fans love everything about #4.

The only problem is they don't want him back. They've absolutely fired him from the Packers organization and I can't believe this is actually happening. The Green Bay Packers have made it clearer and clearer that Aaron Rodgers is going to be the starting quarterback, and to think that they think Rodgers is the better choice over Favre is insane. Well, actually the Packers don't believe that. They know Favre gives the team a better chance at winning the Super Bowl. Why are the Packers doing this? The reason is simple and I'll spell it out to those who haven't figured it out...T H E Y D O N ' T L I K E B R E T T F A V R E. Is it personal? Did Brett steal something from Ted Thompson? Did Brett defy Mike McCarthy at some point last season and said "Aw, to hell with you, I'm Brett Favre and I'm bigger than this organization!"? Did Brett flip off a fan and gamble on dog fights in his back yard? I'm leaning toward the first one.

I would like to think that the Packers' front office have discussed the realistic possibilities that the fans will get extremely irate if they don't make Brett Favre the starting quarterback. As soon as Rodgers makes a bad play or throws that dreaded INT at a crucial point in the game, the fans will riot and scream wildly for Favre. I would also like to believe that the Packers realize that by refusing to grant Favre's release would not only be a slap in the face to Favre himself, but a giant bitch slap to all the cheeseheads out there. Do the Packers and Ted Thompson really want to sacrifice the most marketable figure in Green Bay and Wisconsin sports history? Favre is a living legend in that town, and rightfully so.

Apparently, the Packers have gone against Favre's wish to be traded to a team within the NFC North. Why? So that Favre won't have two chances to come back as a Viking or Bear and smoke the Packers? Even if management is tired of Favre's indecisiveness the last few years, that's not a good enough reason to cut ties with him. They should tolerate and respect his emotions because of the kind of guy he is, but most importantly, the kind of player he is. Ted Thompson needs to swallow his pride and do the fans, the league, and Favre a favor by making him first on that QB depth chart.
