NHL Buzz: New Jersey Devils Close to Another Contract with Kovalchuk

Todd CordellCorrespondent IAugust 24, 2010

Various reports have been suggesting that the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk are closing in on a contract. Two reports even suggest it will happen today. As a hockey fan you should be thrilled when this happens for a few reasons.

1. You don't have to hear about Kovalchuk anymore.

2. The Devils will have to make some trades which are always exciting.

3. They might have a player your favorite team will be interested.

If and when Ilya Kovalchuk signs in New Jersey, they will look to trade a player or two. I have seen Patrik Elias' name come up a fair bit recently but he has a NMC and I highly doubt he would waive it. Bryce Salvador, Colin White, Dainius Zubrus, and Brian Rolston seem like more likely trade options.

Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! sports reports that Alex Semin is training non-stop in Russia and will be in the best shape of his life for the upcoming season.

According to the OC Register Joffrey Lupul is having some back problems and will not be ready for the season opener.

According to sportsnet.ca, Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray still thinks he will be moved.

I can confirm that the Thrashers have expressed interest in Lee Stempniak; however, they will not be disappointed if they don't sign him as it leaves a roster spot open for young guns like Alex Burmistrov, Carl Klingberg, and Patrice Cormier.

Cristobal Huet will be playing in Switzerland this season as the Blackhawks have loaned him to HC Fribourg-Gotteron. The Blackhawks now have about $1 million in cap space with 21 players on their roster.

Tim Kennedy is generating a fair amount of interest, it is rumored that six teams have expressed interest in the forward. I have heard that the Maple Leafs are interested but only on a two-way contract.

Willie Mitchell is expected to make his decision today. The Capitals, Kings, Sharks, and Canucks continue to express interest.

If Willie Mitchell signs in Vancouver you can bank on a Kevin Bieksa trade.

I am seeing mixed reports regarding Tomas Kaberle. Some say he wants out of Toronto while others say he is happy in Toronto and would like to stay their long term.

This concludes today's edition of NHL Buzz, enjoy.
