Carolina Panthers: What Are Their Chances Of Winning The NFC South?

Preview/Prediction

August 04, 2008

I believed the Carolina Panthers had a chance to win the NFC South this year, but one of their most important players had to be a bonehead.

It was announced that Panthers WR Steve Smith has been suspended for the first two games of the upcoming NFL Season.

Steve Smith gave Panthers CB Ken Lucas a black eye and a broken nose during fridays practice. Smith was sent home by the Carolina Panthers.

The suspension will cost Smith more than $205,000, a fraction of his base salary. John Fox also seemed to issue a stern warning toward Smith and his future actions.

Steve Smith and Ken Lucas never really liked each other since Lucas came over in 2005, from Seattle.

“What (Smith) did was wrong and we take very serious and he is being punished severely for it,”  Head Coach John Fox said.

“Steve will be back with us,” Starting Qb Jake Delhomme said. “I know he’s extremely remorseful and he understands. But if we want to be a good football team we have to win without him.”

Smith will miss the season opener at the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 7 and the home opener the following Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Back to the whole Carolina Panthers team, not just WR Steve Smith.

There NFL Draft looked like this:

I do watch the Panthers, when they are televised in my area and really like watching their CB Chris Gamble play. Would love to see him and "Peanut" on the same team playing CB.
The key is if Jake Delhomme stays health for the Panthers. Then with RB DeAngelo William if he has a 1000 yards this year and let RB Jonathan Stewart have a 800 to 1000 yards think the Panthers could win 10 or more games. Watch Mulsin have a big year for them, wouldn't surprise me one bit and probably the own Bear fan that wishes, we kept him. Like them defensively, Chris Gamble's awesome and ain't it interesting with all Da former Bears on the team. Think they'll make the playoffs, could even see them NFC Champions and winning the Superbowl. But like I mentioned earlier, Delhomme has to be health.

How is WR your biggest concern? That's just crazy, man. If anything you should be worried about our DT's. That is by far the weekest part of our team. People also forget Charles Johnson was a projected first round pick that we got in the third round. He was a great college player and should do awesome if indeed he does start. They also already moved Thomas Davis to WLB so that he can make more plays, hopefully. Steve Smith is out for two games and one is the Chicago Bears and I'm affraid they are going to suck. I also don't see why with the three receivers we do have for the Chargers game we can't win. We're going to pound the ball like we did in 2003, thats explains the huge line we have now other than Ryan Kalil but he was a good pickup at center. We do need Delhomma though or we are screwed but if he does go down late in the season and the Packers start Aaron Rodgers maybe we can trade for Favre.

I just think they dont have alot of depth at receiver. DJ Hackett is solid, Moose is old and you dont really know about him and Dwanye Jarrett and Ryne Robinson proved little last season. But i do see the DT's as a problem to. They should have not traded Kris Jenkins or have traded for another DT this offseason Thanks for the comment.

The Panthers have a brand new group at the offensive linemen, the defensive line has no depth, and Delhomme won't be able to throw deep coming off of Tommy John surgery. Williams and Stewart will have to carry the load on offense so Delhomme can use play action. Panthers need to pass to TE more often. The LBs and DBs look strong and deep this season. If Favre gets traded to the Bucs, they will be the favorites, since they won the divsion a year ago and if healthy, the Saints will compete for the divsion crown. The NFC South now appears to be a three team race, if the Panthers stay healthy and improve their performances of the past two tears. It's s do or die season for both Coach Fox and Delhomme.

Yes, Smith made a mistake. But let's move beyond that. And even though Moore's stats in this article look bad, look at what he did in December 2007. That was his best showing last season. Moore and another quarterback you didn't mention, Brett Basanez, should be more than serviceable backups. And wide receiver should not be the primary concern for the Panthers; they took care of that in the offseason. None of the defensive lineman are any good except Julius Peppers, and even he's rebounding from the worst season of his career. But word in Panthers training camp is that Peppers is back to form and better than ever, so that's a plus.
