The Raiders have been criticized for Al's 1st Round drafting, although "Death Ro" was picked 8th this year and looks good, but Al certainly picks it up when he hand the reins over to the scouts. The Raiders have a legitimate shot and should be the favorite in the AFC West, only because 4th Round picks are delivering as the key players. I will take a look back since the '02 Super Bowl at the 1st and 4th round picks in each year, showing our scouts know what they are doing. (Note: Only times with both a 1st and 4th together will be examined.)
1st Round Selection-Nnamdi Asomugha (CB Cal)
4th Round Selection- Shurron Pierson (DE USF)
This is the opposite of recent patterns for the Raiders, back when Al had some wits. The Raiders also took Tyler Brayton, who is semi-successful in Carolina now. Pierson was an athletic freak, where as Nnamdi was "the slow kid who couldn't cover". Al proved them wrong, unlike in years to come after 2005.
1st Round- Robert Gallery (OT Iowa)
4th Round- Carlos Francis (ATH Tx. Tech)
Yup, he was an athlete who ran a 4.3 40. Davis obviously didn't lose his wits, as Gallery is a solid guard, but it went downhill from here. At least Robert Gallery is still in the NFL. In 2006, the tide would turn.
1st Round-Fabian Washington (CB Nebraska)
3rd Round-Andrew Walter (QB Arizona St.)
I bring this draft up because Davis blew his early picks, picking these two rather than Justin Tuck, Frank Gore, and Aaron Rodgers. The Raiders do have a 1st rounder from this year on their squad in Jason Campbell. They have 1 pick (Routt) on their roster and only 3 are in the NFL that they selected in this draft. This is why 2006 and 2007 were so bad.
1st- JaMarcus "Purple Drank" Russell (QB LSU)
4th- Michael Bush (RB Louisville)
This is the most obvious of the 1st-4th correlation. Russell will never return to the league, and Mike Bush could be a center away from a pro bowl year. Bush had 1st round talent according the experts on draft day. But, Bush broke his leg his senior year in 2006 and was pushed back. What a steal.
1st-Darren McFadden (RB Arkansas)
4th-Tyvon Branch (S UCONN)
Same situation for McFadden. His twitter says he had chicken fingers for lunch. Glad he is enjoying them, because he may be out of work with another bad season. Tyvon Branch, like Bush, is ready for a pro bowl, especially with Nnamdi on the other side of the field. Again, a steal.
1st-Darrius Heyward-Bey (WR Maryland)
4th-Louis Murphy (WR Florida)
It is too early to say which receiver will be better in 2015, but in 2009, Murphy saved DHB's behind and Al Davis's behind. Murphy looked like a 1st rounder. DHB a 4th Rounder. I think DHB had loads of potential, but Murphy saved the Raiders in 2009. We also got LB Slade Norris in Round 4.
1st-Rolando McClain (LB Alabama)
4th- Bruce Campbell (OT Maryland)
Those two names were associated with the 1st round and played well against Dallas. These names show what a good draft we had. I don't think either will bust, but Campbell will be a 4th round steal.
I don't know if the other teams are sleeping, but the Raiders have statistically the best 4th Round in this past decade of any team. It is early in the morning for the 4th round, and the Raiders obviously drink Red Bull.
My way to early 2011 Mini Mock Draft:
2nd Round-Kris O'Dowd (C USC)
