The San Francisco 49ers signed veteran running back Brian Westbrook to a one-year contract.  Westbrook, who is two-time Pro-Bowler, will serve as a back-up to Frank Gore.  The addition of Westbrook gives the 49ers one of most productive backfields in the league.

The 49ers had an available roster spot after second-year running back Glen Coffee abruptly retired. Coffee said he lost passion for the game and wanted to dedicated his life to serving God.

Westbrook is a jack of all trades; not only is he a effective runner out of the backfield, he also excels catching the ball and can return kick-offs and punts.  He is also a positive presence in the locker room and should mesh well his new football family.
