With Iginla still in the box, Daymond Langkow ended a goal-scoring slump, as he tipped home an Adrian Aucoin point shot to give the Flames a little bit of life.
The Flames seemingly had a little more fire, but still couldn't hit the net if it was 500 feet wide. Again, cue Jarome Iginla, who took a loose puck in front of the net and backhanded home the game-tying goal from his back. The Flames were firing on all cylinders and looking for the go-ahead goal.
Early in the third period, both teams were going back and forth when Zherdev flew past three Flames players, forcing Sarich to trip him up with his leg. Yet another bad bounce for Calgary, as a pass was accidentally tipped past Kipper by Alex Tanguay. No goal was scored, but it was still not a great feeling for the Flames bench.
Soon after, while the Flames had the puck, CBC showed a replay of Adam Foote kicking a goal into his own net. As soon as that replay ended, Aucoin took a shot from the point that went off of Foote's foot and into the net. Finally a bounce that went the Flames' way—and in the most ironic of ways as well.
The Flames were once again pressing for the lead and the win, but Huselius couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, and the Flames couldn't muster anything of substance.
Going into overtime, it looked like the Flames had all of the momentum. However, the Flames' sloppy play in their own end took over, and after beating a Calgary defenseman on a race to the puck behind Kipper, Beech threw the puck in front of the net to a waiting Glencross.
Glencross wristed it past Kipper quite easily, and the Flames went had lost another game.
It was a great night for the Blue Jackets, as they ended their own winless slump, but the Flames are riding a thin bubble. They did pick up a point, but a team struggling as badly as the Flames are needs wins like this to boost their confidence.
When you are slumping and you lose to another slumping team, it pushes the light at the end of the tunnel even further away.
The Flames had all of the momentum that a team could possibly need, but poor coverage in their own end allowed the Blue Jackets to jump on multiple scoring chances, and Columbus was able to turn those chances into a win.
Not only was Iginla's milestone overlooked, but the Flames continued to slip further down the Western Conference standings.
