Could Joe Calzaghe Be Ducking Kelly Pavlik?

Now that Joe Calzaghe has beaten Bernard Hopkins—thereby proving himself not only to be the man to beat in the super middleweight class, but also the light heavyweight divisions—why is he taking a fight with a way-past-his-prime, 39-year-old Roy Jones Jr., instead of taking the fight everyone wants him to take, with middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik?

Is the "Pride of Wales" really avoiding a fight with the "Ghost" because he's afraid he'll lose?

If he is, you can't blame him! Kelly Pavlik is a hurricane, destroying everything and everyone in his path to become one of boxing's top pound-for-pound fighters. He brutally beat Edison Miranda when no one thought he would, knocked out Jermain Taylor in a huge upset, beat Taylor again, and easily disposed of an overmatched Gary Locket, who happens to be trained by the same group of guys fighting Calzaghe.

Not saying the "Italian Dragon" is afraid of Pavlik, but could you blam him if he was?

My opinion: Even if Calzaghe fights Jones, which probably will happen, he should still fight the young Pavlik before he retires. NO MORE GEEZERS!!!

Pavlik's power vs. the remarkable hand speed of Joe Calzaghe...what a match it would be!

Calzaghe is not so much avoiding Pavlik as he is chasing Jones. This is a fight he has wanted for some time, and despite his age Jones will be a bigger draw than Pavlik at this time. I have no problem with him fighting Jones, I just hopes he fights Pavlik after that win.

Yes and Pavlik is avoiding the man who called him out recently in Arthur Abraham, but lets not mention that. Why is he bothering with BHOP? To be honest I don't think it'll be an easy fight for him, Hopkins is bigger than Taylor (who had Pavlik in BIG trouble) And he hits harder and before anyone says 'Taylor beat BHOP twice' everyone knows that both those fights were dodgy decisions. Didn't Winky lose a "decision" to Taylor as well? One thing is for sure, we will know who Pavlik is after he fights Hopkins, but I think Joe Calzaghe will be too smart for Kelly. Why not fight the Lions in your own division? Before we call JC, he fought everyone put in front of him and beat them, Pavlik hasn't held his title for a year yet let alone 11.

THANK, look at the article. It doesnt once say i think Calzaghe is avoiding Pavlik. I simply asked if he is and talked about a possible fight between the two. I also just stated my opinion that i'd rather see Calzaghe fight Pavlik than Jones because, as a fan of Calzaghe's, i dont want people saying he was too scared to fight Pavlik and took a fight with an old Jones instead

Calzaghe will catch a titanic beating from Pavlik as will Hopkins.Freddy Roach refused to train hopkins because of it, he says"Ive been where hopkins is and he should retire as per his dead mothers request."Pavlik is unbeatable in your face and tireless in the ring. The only fight that could get him in trouble is possibly a Roy Jones style fighter but younger than Jones, someone who can set traps and trap and punish the young champion.By the way Calzaghe has not won the Roy Jones fight yet and you shuld look for the upset if the odds are lopsided

While I think Pavlik is more dangerous than Jones I would not say that Calzaghe is avoiding a fight with him. I think it's simply that Calzaghe would recieve more money by fighting Jones over Pavlik. In addition, Calzaghe's past fights show that he is not the type of guy who would duck a fight. He fought Kessler who is by no means a joke and Hopkins who is a wily old veteran whose defense is second to known. I agree that a Pavlik vs Calzaghe fight can be an amazing fight, maybe fight of the year material.

At this stage of calzaghe's career and because of the fact that his ex-wife gets half of all his purses, he needs the big money..... This is something Jones can bring but Pavlick can't. After following calzaghe since his 10th pro fight and seein the display against hopkins i believe it is time for him to retire.Personally i think the Jones fight is one too far.He has lost 2 much speed at light heavy and is a shadow of the fighter who fought Lacy, Kessler etc.Just look at the tapes.Hopkins was duckin under his left hand, turning and laughing at him.I don't want him to lose that perfect record of his but $$$$ makes the worl go round ey

I was in the process of writing an article all about Calzaghe's future prospects against Roy Jones and Kelly Pavlik until I scrapped it when I heard news of Calzaghe's injury. I was upset before when it seemed that Joe wasn't interested in fighting Kelly, but he has since made it clear that he doesn't wish to end his career fighting Roy Jones, and would like to go on to fight Pavlik afterwards.
