When people speak about the Philadelphia Eagles wide receivers, the focus tends to be on the one-two combination of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin. You can’t really blame them, but Jason Avant is just as big of a part of this wide receiver group as the other two.
Avant is the workhorse of the wide receiver group. He’s the guy that’s going to go across the middle and the one who is open on third downs.
We really saw the importance of Avant during the 2009 season, but I think he will really make a name for himself in 2010. At this year’s training camp, he has been nothing short of spectacular. He’s running terrific routes and is catching everything that’s thrown at him.
Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg can’t praise Avan’t play enough and I can understand why. He’s not a big talker so he stays under the radar. However, he comes to work to do his job everyday and does it very well.
There’s been a lot of discussion on the amount of double teams that Jackson will see in 2010. He had an amazing 2009 season and made an endless amount of big plays. He’ll draw a lot of attention in 2010 and will probably see a lot of safety help over the top.
With that in mind, I’ve thought a lot about how things should open up for Maclin. However, Avant will benefit just as much, if not more. He should see a lot of mismatches this year, and I expect him to take full advantage of every single one of them.
The Eagles have a great situation at the wide receiver position this year, and I can’t wait to see the year Avant is going to have.
