But hey—who were they to question the judgment of an organization that had just broken a decades-old Super Bowl drought.

Right?

Maybe not.

Critics have taken to blaming Archuelta for the Bears defensive struggles in 2007—especially because he's often found himself out of position or outmaneuvered by opponents.

But that's not the whole story.

Ignore the lowlights you watch over and over again on that new DVR you got for the season—and take a minute to consider the stats:

Archuelta has 56 tackles this season—third on the team. He's also notched two sacks, recovered a fumble, and snagged one interception.

I'll be the first to admit that those numbers are nothing to brag about—but they're better than those posted by the rest of the Bears' secondary.

And let's not forget that Archuleta has been dealing with a broken hand which sidelined him for a game.

But if the decline of the Chicago D isn't all AA's fault, what IS the problem?

Injuries, mostly.

I know blaming the injury bug isn't as fun bashing the likes of Archuleta and defensive coordinator Bob Babich—but when you have guys like Nathan Vasher, Mike Brown, Dusty Dvoracek, Lance Briggs, and Tommie Harris battling health problems, the defense is bound to be a shell of its former self.

Sorry fellow Bears fans—until this squad gets healed, you'll just have to keep cringing every time the opposing offense takes the field.
