Usain Bolt: 10 Reasons He's Suddenly Human Again
In track and field there are a lot of reasons why anyone can be beat. More so than in any other sport.
The old cowboy saying goes:
"There never was a horse that couldn't be rode; never was a cowboy who couldn't be throwed."
And that seems to be the case at any track meet.
But in the past three years, we have come to expect the impossible from Jamaican superstar sprinter Usain Bolt.
It had come to the point where we really thought he was from out of this world.
Well, this past weekend we found out that this is not the case.
Here are 10 possible reasons to explain his loss...
10. Usain Went Hollywood
There have been rumors, as there always are, of the man enjoying the fruits of his labor. A few months back reports surfaced that he crashed the BMW Puma sent him for all of his records.
Fortunately he wasn't hurt.
Gossip sites have pointed out that he went from being with his long time girlfriend, to now dating a reality TV star.
Bolt has also told us of his love for dancing.
Take it from me, Caribbean folks know how to party.
Could all the celebrations be catching up to him?
9. The Delilah Principle
I don't know if I made this up or not, but remember the biblical story of Samson and Delilah?
The big powerful dude betrayed by a mischievous, beautiful woman?
Well, I don't know if she betrayed him, but Taneish Simpson a.k.a. "Lava" (from "For The Love Of Ray J") sure seems like she could be a distraction.
8. Other Interests
I'm sure when you get as successful as Bolt has become in such a short period of time, it can be overwhelming.
People pull you in all directions at once, and you find other interests.
For instance, he says he wants to write his autobiography, which should be coming out sometime soon.
That might keep you from training as hard as possible.
7. Too Laid Back
Before he became the world famous sprinter, Bolt was a runner like everyone else who would win some and lose some.
But critics were constantly calling Bolt lazy because he was not reaching his full potential.
Once he exploded onto the scene, he went from being lazy to "laid back".
Well maybe he is comfortable with what he's done and it's harder now to find that fire.
6. He's Tired
For the better part of two years, Bolt has been everywhere.
When he's not racing, he is making public appearances or just enjoying being Usain Bolt.
With track, you can always find a meet somewhere in the world.
And if you put together a nice appearance fee, you might be able to get Bolt to come and give your race some legitimacy.
And if he wants to strike while the fire is hot, he has to chase down (no pun intended) all the big money races, since track dominance is short lived.
All that might lead to fatigue—mentally and physically.
5. He's Bored
Bolt's two main competitors have also held sprinting records.
Both Tyson Gay and his fellow countrymen Asafa Powell run really fast, but they also get injured quite a bit.
Which means Bolt tends to win races easily when they are not around.
Maybe he got bored and didn't train hard enough.
In life, they say once you reach the top there is no where to go but down.
In sports, the saying is that it's harder to stay on top than it is to get there.
Maybe both are true and Bolt has reached his plateau.
And maybe the effort to stay on top is too much for him.
3. Opponents Are Getting Healthy
As stated before, as far as we know, there are only two men on the planet that can give Bolt a run for his money: American Tyson Gay and Jamaican Asafa Powell.
Though Powell dropped out of the race last week, Gay looked healthy and fresh for the first time in a long time.
Maybe when those two are healthy, the competition is closer than we thought.
Word came out today that Usain Bolt is shutting it down.
He will miss the rest of the 2010 track season with a a pretty serious back injury, and he needs to rest so that the injury doesn't spread to his legs.
When you move that fast, your whole body is under stress.
Did it affect his race or is it an excuse?
As fast as he has gone, I think we can give Bolt the benefit of the doubt.
1. Maybe...Just Maybe...He's Just Human
Maybe everything here is true.
Or maybe none of it is.
And if that is the case the other possibility is that he was human after all and just had two really good years.
Hopefully we will get to see him healthy again for more great races in the future.
