Alabama Crimson Tide Quarterback Breakdown
SEC Sports Hub's 2008 SEC Preview: Alabama Quarterback Breakdown
SEC Sports Hub has begun releasing its 2008 SEC Preview. Here is an article on the Crimson Tide quarterback situation in 2008.
Alabama’s senior starting quarterback John Parker Wilson has had his fair share of ups and downs throughout his career as the Crimson Tide signal caller. Wilson picked apart Tennessee last year in one of the best games of his career. He also got pummeled late in the game against LSU and fumbled, when it seemed like Alabama had the Tigers on the ropes.
In any case, Wilson hopes to close out a shaky career with a great final season in 2008 and he certainly should get the protection to do it.
How Wilson fares during the season will depend largely on the development of his receiving corps, a position that is relatively weak at the moment.
One of Wilson’s main goals, aside from reaching the SEC Championship, will undoubtedly be to beat the Auburn Tigers before he graduates.
Behind Wilson will be sophomore Greg McElroy, a talented youngster who could see time even if Wilson is playing well. McElroy looked to be the quarterback of the future during the Crimson Tide’s spring game and should Wilson not perform up to Nick Saban’s expectations, he could end up starting for the Tide. McElroy has a great arm and reads defenses exceptionally well for his lack of experience in SEC competition.
He will also be pushed by true freshman Star Jackson, although most Alabama fans expect that Jackson will redshirt during the 2008 season to create some separation between him and McElroy. Jackson is an excellent dual threat quarterback.
Whoever ends up at quarterback should be well protected throughout the 2008 campaign, which bodes well for the Crimson Tide. Wilson, in particular, performs at his best when he has time to survey the field and decide which throw he wants to make.
If his receivers can improve and become reliable targets quickly, the Crimson Tide offense could be much better than expected in 2008.
