Matt's Two Cents: Can Managers Still Have a Place in Wrestling?

Matthew HesterSenior Writer IAugust 4, 2010

There are many aspects of mainstream pro wrestling that have changed over the years. Some of these changes have been for the better. For instance, we rarely see offensive gimmicks given to black wrestlers. We also don't see certain moves used anymore due to so many devastating injuries.

The one major changed that I never understood was the removal of managers. Sure we get one once in a blue moon, but for the most part they have all fallen to the wayside. Throughout wrestling's history, managers played an important part of this great past time.

They helped stars get over in the NWA, AWA, WCW, and the WWF. Then in the 90's we would see that start to change. A lot of it had to do with talent being trained better in cutting promos. This lead to great promo cutters like the Rock, Stone Cold, Jericho, and many more. So I guess it didn't bother me as much when they stopped being around.

As I watch today's wrestlers bloom, I cant help but think that with managers we could see many more stars blossom. Look at a guy like Swagger for example. He has the talent of a veteran when it comes to throwing down a good match. On the other hand, he can't cut a promo if his life depended on it. Other guys who could benefit from a manager could be people like Kozlov or John Morrison.

How much better could they be if they had someone like Heenan, Hart, or Slick talking for them. Heenan made so many stiffs on the mic look good its not even funny. I realize that guys like that don't grow on tree's. If they looked around though, I'm sure they could find a few guys who could get the job done.

Maybe I am just showing my age here, but I still think these guys can make an impact in mainstream wrestling. A manager could not only speak for a wrestler. They can also be incorporated into story lines and used as a comedy act.

That is my 2 cents for the day. Let me know how you feel on the issue.
