Nick Masset and Danny Richar, that is what the Reds got in return for Ken Griffey Jr. I can't imagine a more ignominious end to Ken Griffey Jr's. tenure as a Cincinnati Red. Admittedly, Junior is not the player at 38 he was at 28, but he still has the ability to be dangerous at the plate. He is currently on a 12 game hitting streak and is batting .303 since the All Star break. Has anyone even heard of Masset or Richar? I understand the reasons the Reds wouldn't have picked up Griffey's option for next year. He is old, his bat speed is slowing down, he is becoming a defensive liability, etc. If I honestly thought this move would propel the Reds out of their 10 year funk I would stand up and applaud, I don't think that's the case. I think this trade was motivated by other factors, namely the much ballyhooed "throat slash" gesture Junior made towards the broadcast booth last Saturday while crossing home plate after hitting his 607th career home run. Two days later the team's owner makes a surprise visit to the GM while the team is travelling and today the trade was announced. I don't think the Castellini visit was a coincidence. In any case, the deal is done and Cincinnati fans will have to find someone other than Griffey to blame for lackluster performance and the inability to win. I think it's sad. One of baseball's best deserved better than he got in Cincinnati. Good luck Junior, I hope you get that ring in Chicago.
