Sent off as the 9-to-2 third choice, Dakota Phone made it a perfect 2-for-2 over Del Mar’s main track, winning the Grade 2 $200,000 San Diego Handicap by half a length over 3-to-1 favorite Battle of Hastings.
Ridden by the meet’s leading rider Joel Rosario, the 5-year-old son of Zavata had nine in the money finishes in 15 starts over the past two years against some of the toughest horses in the nation, but was finally able to break through with a big victory for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer to move his career earnings to $583,810.
Earlier in the day, La Nez got back on the winning track, storming down the middle of the track to capture the $100,000 The Fleet Treat for California-bred three-year-old fillies.
Reunited with jockey Victor Espinoza, who last rode her here at Del Mar in last year’s Grade 1 Darley Debutante, La Nez has now won three of 11 lifetime and finished in the money in nine of those starts.
