Deadline: The Marlins Acquire Reliever Rhodes
The Marlins have made a move on deadline day, it just isn't necessarily the huge Manny Ramirez splash everyone is waiting for. One left handed reliever is off the market, as the Marlins have acquired the smooth tossing lefty Arthur Rhodes for pitching prospect Gaby Hernandez.
Rhodes, an intimidating savvy veteran in his 17th season, is a left hander's nightmare, and piece the Marlins desperately needed. He is 2-1 with 1 save and 13 holds this season. His is 2.86 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 0 ERA against lefties, .195 avg against lefties and .163 avg on the road had to be key factors in what attracted the Marlins to him, and will be invaluable to the Marlins pen as they push for the playoffs.
Gaby Hernandez, 22, is a pretty good return for interim Seattle GM Lee Pelekoudas. Hernandez, is considered almost major league ready, has a 6.47 ERA in the minors between two levels this season as he struggled when promoted to Triple-A while dealing with a back injury, but is 3-0 with a 4.30 ERA and 17:4 K:BB ratio in 23 innings at Double-A.
