With the trade deadline only little more than a day away, here is Part three of where I think the Top 25 guys on the market will end up (21-25).
Stephen Drew: Cardinals
As the Arizona fire sale continues, a guy they could decide to move is shortstop Stephen Drew. Drew, this season has put up a .265 AVG with four HR and 30 RBIs; not the best numbers, but is still the best shortstop on the trade market.
Interested teams: The D'Backs haven't been actively trying to move Drew, but a team like the St. Louis Cardinals have been looking for an upgrade at shortstop over Brendan Ryan.
Prediction: I think that Drew will get traded to the Cardinals as they look to address other needs after losing out on Roy Oswalt. Drew would be a clear upgrade over Ryan and could help the Red Birds down the stretch.
Paul Maholm: Staying Put
As Pirates GM Neal Huntington stated yesterday on MLB Network, his team is in fact planning to sell this deadline (what else is new), and a guy that could attract interest in starter Paul Maholm. Maholm, this season so far has put up a 6-8 record with an ERA just north of four. However, his value is more important due to the fact that he is left-handed.
Interested teams: The Dodgers appear to be the only team that has checked in on Maholm.
Prediction: I believe that the Pirates could trade some pieces, but I believe that Maholm will stay because of a lack of interest. The Dodgers still have a crack at Ted Lilly, and only view Maholm as a backup option.
Kelly Johnson: Staying Put
Another D'Back that could be traded is second baseman and former Brave Kelly Johnson. Johnson has had a very nice season as he is hitting .275 with 16 HR and 49 RBIs. Johnson, along with teammate Stephen Drew are the top middle infielders that teams could target.
Interested teams: Right now, the Rays and Cardinals have talked about bringing in Johnson as both are looking for middle infield help.
Prediction: I think that with Drew and Johnson, one moves, the other stays. I see Johnson being the one that stays. However don't out the possibility of him moving in August.
Miguel Tejada: Padres
I am cheating a little bit here, as reports are coming in that say that the Padres have already acquired Tejada. But just to give a run down on Tejada's numbers he is hitting .269 with seven HRs and 39 RBIs this season.
Tejada will go to San Diego and will provide the club with an option at shortstop and third baseman.
Mike Lowell: Staying Put
A guy that we thought was going to be traded during the off-season who is still available is Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell. Lowell lost his job to Adrian Beltre and has been hurt for the majority of the season. He is rehabbing in AAA and has hit four home runs in his short time in Pawtucket. He could be a guy that could come cheap.
Interested teams: As of recent, Lowell hasn't drawn much interest, but the Twins, Tigers, and Rangers have all called about him.
Prediction: I just don't see the Red Sox being able to move Lowell because of his injury, so I think he will stay in Boston. Lowell could be a candidate for an August trade if he proves he is healthy.
