I was shocked when I heard that the Timberwolves decided to take Jonny Flynn with the sixth overall pick right after Ricky Rubio.
I figured that the Wolves would go after a guy like Stephen Curry, a shooting guard, who can nail three-pointers with ease.
Instead, David Kahn went with back-to-back point guard's, which shocked many people.
After a mediocre rookie season, there have been reports that Flynn might be traded, although David Kahn claims that Flynn isn't going anywhere.
In his rookie campaign, Flynn averaged 13.5 points, 4.4 assists, and 1 steal per game.
He's a great player, human-being, and teammate, but Minnesota just isn't the place for Jonny.
I will be listing five possible destinations for Mr. Flynn.
Enjoy the show!
1. Detroit Pistons
Detroit receives:
Jonny Flynn
Corey Brewer
2011 second-round-pick
Minnesota receives:
Rodney Stuckey
Tayshaun Prince
2011-second-round-pick
This trade makes a lot of sense for both teams for multiple reasons.
The Pistons have been trying to get rid of Tayshaun Prince for a long time now. Minnesota could use a small forward to mentor Wesley Johnson until he's ready to step in and be an all-star caliber player like I anticipate he will be.
As for Rodney Stuckey, he's listed as a point guard on the Piston's depth chart, which is ridiculous. Stuckey is in no way a point guard in any way shape or form.
The Pistons would acquire a new starting point guard in Jonny Flynn that will be able to be the floor general from day one.
When all is said and done, Detroit could wind up getting the better end of this blockbuster-like deal.
2. Indiana Pacers
Indiana receives:
Jonny Flynn
Corey Brewer
Minnesota receives:
Brandon Rush
T.J. Ford
2011 second-round-pick
Cash
Don't worry, the Timberwolves wouldn't be hanging on to T.J. Ford and his ridiculously large contract. They would likely buy-out his contract or trade him away.
Brandon Rush is a player with plenty of potential that is not getting the minutes he deserves with the Pacers.
With the Pacers drafting Lance Stephenson, Rush's minutes could end up going down even more. Now is the best time to trade Brandon than any other time.
Indiana would receive a new starting point guard in Jonny Flynn that will be able to help turn their franchise around.
Corey Brewer's defensive capabilities and three-point shooting will also be a big factor in whether or not the Pacers succeed next season.
All in all, this is a great deal for both squads.
3. Memphis Grizzlies
Memphis receives:
Jonny Flynn
Martell Webster
Corey Brewer
Minnesota receives:
Mike Conley
Xavier Henry (sign-and-trade)
2011 second-round-pick
The Grizzlies have been reported as saying that they are no longer sold on having Mike Conley as their starting point guard, which will lead to him either being traded or benched.
As for Xavier Henry, it's apparent that Memphis and Henry cannot work out a deal in his favor.
But does it really matter?
The Grizzlies are loaded in the back-court. Unless they plan on shipping off O.J. Mayo, do they really need Henry that much?
I realize that they took him in the first round, but he is definite trade bait until the season starts in October.
Memphis in return would obviously get Jonny Flynn, who would be a great fit along with Rudy Gay on the wing.
Corey Brewer, like all other trades, would also be included in the deal in order for the Wolves to dump his salary.
Martell Webster will also be thrown in because the Grizzlies could use depth behind Rudy Gay in case he goes down with an injury of some sort.
4. Portland Trail Blazers
Portland receives:
Jonny Flynn
Corey Brewer
Kosta Koufos
Minnesota receives:
Jerryd Bayless
Rudy Fernandez
2012 first-rounder
This trade makes sense for both squads because the Blazers get rid of two guys that are not used properly in Jerryd Bayless and Rudy Fernandez.
Although Bayless is a fan-favorite, he is not right for the Blazers' system that they run.
Fernandez is another talented player on Portland's roster that is under-utilized. There have been recent talks of him being traded as soon as possible.
Portland would receive a young point guard in Jonny Flynn that would get to learn behind one of the better veteran point guard's in the league, Andre Miller.
They would also acquire the services of a great defender in Corey Brewer, who can also knock down three-pointer's.
Oh, and Kosta Koufos is included. Big whoop.
5. Toronto Raptors
Toronto receives:
Jonny Flynn
Corey Brewer
Kosta Koufos
Minnesota receives:
DeMar DeRozan
Jose Calderon
Cash (Chris Bosh trade exception)
This trade may be too good to be true, but it could very well.
The Raptors desperately want to move Jose Calderon. Minnesota would need a point guard if they trade Jonny Flynn. Therefore this trade makes plenty of sense.
DeMar DeRozan is a talented athlete who can play at either shooting guard or small forward, but with the recent acquisition of Leandro Barbosa, it's a lot less likely that Toronto will rely on DeRozan.
They may not want to give him up because he has a lot of potential, but then again so does Jonny Flynn.
Corey Brewer would also be a nice piece as a defensive specialist that Toronto could certainly use.
Of any trade, I would like to see this one occur the most.
