The Steelers have a lot of quantity, but not a lot of quality on the offensive line. That took a hit with a season ending Achilles injury to starting right tackle, Willie Colon, as well as a foot injury to rookie Chris Scott. Expect the Steelers to keep at least nine on the offensive line.
Makes the Cut:
Max Starks, LT
The massive tackle will have to step up his game this season, particularly for the start of the season.
Chris Kemoeatu, LG
A huge presence on the interior of the line, the Steelers will be running behind Kemoeatu and Starks.
Justin Hartwig, C
Coming off a shoulder injury, Hartwig will only be keeping the seat warm for first round pick, Maurkice Pouncey. This is likely his last year starting at center for the Steelers.
Trai Essex, G/T
Essex is the Steelers top swingman, having the ability to start at tackle or guard. He will be competing for the starting right tackle position, left open by Colon’s injury.
Maurkice Pouncey, C
Pittsburgh’s first round-draft selection, Pouncey is likely a year away from starting at center, but should start at right guard this year.
Jonathan Scott, G/T
Re-joining offensive line coach, Sean Kugler, Scott could start at right tackle. If not, he could take over as the Steelers’ swingman.
Ramon Foster, G/T
Foster was an undrafted free agent, but started four games as a rookie. He was a pleasant surprise and could be even better this year.
Kraig Urbik, G
Urbik is eventually expected to become a starter at guard, so he will have to show growth this season. If he can win a starting job this year, the Steelers line will be in good shape.
Doug Legursky, C
Legursky saw time with the first team during OTAs, and if Pouncey starts at guard for the year, the coaching staff should commit to it.
Misses the Cut:
Tony Hills, T
The time is now for Hills, but it may be too little, too late.
Chris Scott, OL
Scott is having surgery on his foot and will be on the PUP list.
Adrian Jones, OL
The recently signed Jones is a camp depth player.
Kyle Jolly, T
A big bodied tackle will need time to develop.
Dorian Brooks, G
Too much to overcome to make the roster.
