Twirling Candy Crushes In Oceanside On Opening Day at Del Mar

At least for one day, the struggles of the horse racing industry were put on the back burner.

An overcast sky did nothing to damper the excitement for the record crowd of 45,309 on Opening Day at Del Mar.

Those in attendance witnessed a smashing performance in the Oceanside Stakes by 3-to-5 favorite Twirling Candy, a three-year-old son of Candy Ride who remained unbeaten winning by over two lengths. He could make a big impact in Grade 1 races around the country over the second half of 2010.

Twirling Candy’s victory was especially gratifying for trainer John Sadler, as owner Jenny Craig and her late husband Sid have been mainstays in the Del Mar area for decades.

In the first race of the 2010 meet, North Fork made it a perfect 3-for-3 over Del Mar’s Polytrack for trainer Eric Kruljac.
