Emil Smith, a 2011 recruit who verbally committed to play for Boise State, died in an automobile accident Saturday night.

Smith, a weakside defensive end from Perris, California, was a passenger in a speeding automobile, and died approximately one hour after arriving at the hospital.

Before committing to Boise State, Smith was entertaining offers from Duke, Air Force, and UTEP, along with Pac-10 schools USC, Oregon State, and Washington.

Smith played high school football at Rancho Verde High School in Moreno Valley, California.

Coach Pete Duffy, commenting when he accepted Boise State's offer, said, "He's an excellent student and a really good kid."

Sadly, another life cut tragically short.
