Nicole Vaidisova married fellow czech Radek Stepanek on Saturday in their home country. While this news saddened me and many other Vaidisova fans, clinging to the hope we had a chance with her, it also led me to wonder if Vaidisova will ever come back to the sport.
She retired this season, but she is only 21. There have been so many who have come back over the last few years. However, I'm not sure Vaidisova will be one of them. Maybe she simply wants to be a wife and someday a mother (will there be youngsters running around the court someday doing the worm like their father?) and maybe that will be good enough for her.
Vaidisova was another of the teenage sensations, who may have had too much success too early in her career. She seemed to get burnout on the game and clearly lost her passion for playing. It's certainly possible she will rediscover that passion at some point and come back. She still has the tools to be a top player, but unlike some of the others I'm just not sure she really wants to be a tennis player.
We've seen it so many times before where players have too much success at an early age and end up lost. In a way it's good to see that Vaidisova appears to be happy and at the end of the day that's all that matters.
I certainly wish her and Radek the very best. If she comes back that would be great, but if not hopefully she'll find happiness. At the end of the day that's what we really want from our stars, isn't it?
