Too Close to Call: A Look at Baseball's Division Races

This 2008 season has been crazy. Tampa Bay leads the AL East by one game over the Red Sox and three games over the Yankees. In the AL Central, the Tigers have not lived up to their expectations this season. The same can be said about the Cleveland Indians, who find themselves in last place in the AL Central, while the Chicago White Sox lead the division by a game and a half over the Minnesota.

We now turn our attention to the national league. In the NL East, the New York Mets lead the division by a half a game, over the Philadelphia Phillies. Also the surprising Florida Marlins, are only one game out. The NL Central is crazy too, having the top three teams in the league hail from the same division.

The Chicago Cubs lead the division over the Milwaukee Brewers by two games. Since their acquisition of CC Sabathia via trade, the team has been playing its best baseball. Then the St. Louis Cardinals are four games out of first place. Now to the wild wild NL West.

The Arizona Diamondbacks lead the division by one game over the Dodgers and six games over the third place Rockies, who are 48-59, having appeared in last years World Series. The NL West has just been crazy this 2008 season. In the West, one of the teams can win that division being a .500 team.

Judging by the way they are playing this could happen. This season the Diamondbacks got off to a good start and after the first month, they lead the division by five games over the Dodgers. At the time, the D-backs boasted the best record in baseball and now they are only one game over .500.

This division is anyone’s, but I would say watch out for the Rockies, even though they are six games out, since the All Star Break, they are 9-2.
