Free agent and former Lakers reserve guard Jordan Farmar has agreed to a three-year $12 million contract with the New Jersey Nets, according to his agent, Arn Tellum. However, the concern behind this move is the Los Angeles Lakers point guard situation.
Not only has Farmar left the Lakers, but starter Derek Fisher met with Miami Heat president Pat Riley on July 10. Although Fisher has said that he would prefer to resign with Los Angeles, signing with the Heat is very appealing.
If Fisher signs with Miami, or any team other than the Lakers for that matter, it will leave only one natural point guard on the roster, Steve Blake, who has career averages of 7.5 points and 4.3 assists per contest. His averages are similar to Farmar's averages so that would definitely leave the Lakers at a disadvantage.
As of now, the number one priority for Los Angeles should be added more point guard depth as a Plan B if Fisher does not resign.
One suggestion I have for the Lakers is Rafer Alston, a solid point guard who is known for his ability to hit three pointers and his defense, as he has hit 35 percent of three pointers throughout his career in addition to a career average of 1.2 SPG.
Alston would make a good backup for Blake, as he could provide a defensive jolt when needed.
But if Derek Fisher decides to resign with the Lakers then they will be able to survive but regardless, there are many questions surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers point guard situation at this time.
