With the ESPY's coming up on July 14th, a case needs to be made for UFC Lightweight Champ Frankie Edgar to win the Best Upset award this year for his title securing win over previous reigning champ BJ Penn.
Think that he's undeserving? Think again...
Frankie Edgar has a warrior's spirit and he's not afraid to show it. He'll take the fight to his opponents. It was pretty evident when he fought BJ Penn in April. There was no fear, just smart aggression.
In the time leading up to UFC 112, we learned more about Frankie Edgar the man. He's a dedicated family man, a scrappy young fighter, and hard working guy.
Going up against UFC Lightweight juggernaut BJ Penn had most of us pegging Edgar as a guaranteed loss. However, we still found ourselves wishing him the best.
Starting out as a wrestler. Edgar was always on the small side. However he never let that be an excuse to not be his best.
He worked hard to develop his MMA skills; first as a member of the New Jersey based Rhino Fight Team, all the way up to earning his purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from fellow UFC standout Ricardo Almeida.
It is this very work ethic and drive that has helped him amass a 12-1 record en route to beating BJ Penn for the Lightweight Championship.
The in and out darting style that Edgar exhibited during his fight with BJ Penn, looked to have "The Answer" getting the best of their stand up exchanges.
We should expect to see more of that in their upcoming rematch at UFC 118 next month.
Do you see this man? His name is BJ Penn. Until April 10, 2010, he was the UFC Lightweight champion.
Edgar beat this man via decision. This man was not supposed to be beaten. He was the owner of the 155 lbs division.
We can be sure that Penn will be training even harder for their rematch, so it would be great if the ESPY's could just give Edgar the award considering that Mr.Penn will look to destroy Edgar decisively, and I have no doubt that he will be able to do it.
Ah well, being the champ was fun while it lasted...
