With the start of the Montreal Women’s Rogers Cup event, it dawned on me that it is now or never for two of the game's best players.
For French Open champion Ana Ivanovic, it’s a chance to relocate her comfort zone after a second-round exit at Wimbledon.
At Wimbledon, Ivanovic looked tense following her newfound fame and first Grand Slam title. In Montreal, she will be on familiar ground. She broke onto the scene in 2006 in Montreal by defeating Martina Hingis in the final.
In Montreal, hopefully Ivanovic’s strokes will flow as freely as her relaxed smile.
For Maria Sharapova, it’s a chance to redeem a somewhat unimpressive last two majors, since her Aussie Open win out of the chute.
We expected Sharapova to struggle on clay. We didn’t expect her to do better at the French than at Wimbledon, where she lost in the second round.
Sharapova needs success on hardcourts, and she should be the favourite in Montreal.
What will happen? That’s why they play the matches.
