Possible Return of a Legend: Oilers To Bring Back Smyth?

Today, a very interesting tweet came up on my screen. It was TSN's own Ryan Rishaug. The tweets were the following:

"Oilers need veteran leader to play 3rd line-top 6 fill in minutes. Have extra cap space. How bout trading for Ryan Smyth? Very good fit."

"I believe mgmt would strongly consider it if the right deal were there. Had the kings gotten kovalchuk, it would have made sense for both."

"Re:smyth Enough time has passed, all wounds would be healed instand captain. The trick is getting l-a to do the deal, I think he'd waive ntc"

"If I had to venture a guess on smyth, I'd say if it happens, it'd be an in-season deal if the right pieces fall into place with l-a's needs"

Now, Ryan Rishaug has been dead on with Oilers news for a while, and might be on to something here. The Oilers are in need of a vet who can lead both on and off the ice. Smyth would be the perfect fit for the Oilers.

Smyth has played in Edmonton before and knows how to get it done. He has played in a Stanley Cup Finals series, and can still be a 20-30 goal scorer. Bringing him back would add another punch to the Oilers lineup, a punch that might just make Edmonton a playoff team this season.

Yes, I said THIS season.

Now, in order for Smyth to hit the market, the Kings have to land Ilya Kovalchuk. If the Kings land him, they still need a defender. Not that its a huge need, but remember on July 1st the Kings were upset they didn't land a big defender. Could LA be interested in a Sheldon Souray for Ryan Smyth swap? The Kings would save some cap space and already have a 1st line Left Winger in Kovi.

Souray for Smyth would probably need a few more players going each way, I for one would be okay with Andrew Cogliano going LA's way also. My official offer is Cogliano and Souray to the Kings for Smyth and a 3rd rounder in 2011(to make up for the loss of Cogs). Say the Kings make this trade, the Oilers looks like this:

Extra forwards: Ryan Jones and JFJ

That lineup should get the Oilers contending for a playoff spot, but again growing pains could occur with the young kids.

Ryan Smyth would be the captain the Oilers are looking for. A deal can be had between these two teams. Both Smyth and Souray have no-trade-clauses. Smyth would without doubt waive it to return to Edmonton, his hometown where he played some many years, and was the heart and soul of a team that went on a cup run.

Souray just wants to get out of Edmonton and would be really close to his kids, who live in LA.

It will be very interesting to see if the Oilers and Kings can maybe make a deal to bring the Oilers heart and soul back to Edmonton.

In other news, the Oilers have signed forward Brad Moran and defender Jake Taylor to two-way contracts. Both are expected to be AHL players this coming season for the Barons.

The Oilers also signed Forward Alex Giroux last week to a one-way contract, but its expected he will be in the AHL this season. This deal is a win-win for the Oilers.

Maybe he'll shock some people and make the team, which would be great if the Oilers get a steal. If not, and he is sent to the AHL, the Barons get a guy who scored 50 goals last season in the AHL, great!

Should be interesting to see if he gets the nod at the NHL level, or is sent down to the AHL level.

The Oilers opened up development camp on Tuesday. It was the first time Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle and Magnus Svensson were on the ice together. They have all looked good so far, but someone to look out for in a year or two is Center Tyler Pitlick. This kid has a shot and seems like a steal in the second round in this years NHL draft. I will have a recap of the action at camp at the end of the week.
