Drew Miller Is Back for the Detroit Red Wings For the Right Price

TeejayContributor IIJuly 6, 2010

Big news today, as the Red Wings have signed forward Drew Miller to a one-year, $650,000 contract.

This comes as a big relief to some Wings fans, as talks of signing Mike Modano caused many to believe that Miller was possibly on the way out.

The once-Michigan State star was a big pick-up for the Red Wings during this past season, and was a vital key to their much improved penalty kill while amassing 19 points in 66 games.  Many Detroit fans see a promising future with Miller wearing a winged wheel. With those reasons, I assumed keeping him would mean paying more.

I, among many others, was hoping to see Miller back for another year.

With a tight salary situation this offseason, every dollar saved is crucial.  After Miller's year with Detroit, I expected (and I may have been completely wrong to think this) a new contract for him to be around $1 million a year.  Although a couple hundred thousand is no large amount, the extra money could be key in signing another restricted free agent.

Whether or not this is indeed a bargain, which I believe it is, it is great to see Miller back.
