I have mixed feelings about the No. 3 car coming back to NASCAR.
I was as emotional as anyone on Friday night after seeing Dale Earnhardt Jr. drive the No. 3 to the front. But at the same time, to me it is more than a number. There are very few drivers whom i think should run it.
Here they are.
I’m not sure if he would even want to, but I think MOST people would be open to the fourth generation Earnhardt taking to the track in No. 3.
I doubt that Kerry will ever run a full schedule or contend for a win, but I’d love to see him run an Earnhardt throwback, just like his little brother.
The son of Hall of Famer, Junior Johnson. I’ve heard people say his is going to be a great one.
Junior made the No. 3 famous while Dale was still watching his dad tear up the Carolinas.
He is one of the few people outside the Earnhardt/Childress families that I think should run the No. 3.
Just like his older brother, Austin, I am sure Ty would love to drive the No. 3 in NASCAR's top three divisions. I guess Austin gets the first crack at it since he is older. Just the fact that they want to run it shows a lot of guts. Im not sure that either will be able to handle the pressure.
Austin Dillon has said that he want to run the number in honor of his grandfather and former driver, Richard Childress. Who can blame him for that?
I think Richard will let him run it if/when he gets to the cup series. I have a feeling he is in line to replace Jeff Burton when Jeff hangs it up.
I think he is the most likely, if it ever happens.
I would love to see Jr. drive it in the Daytona 500 once. Imagining Jr. driving the No. 3 to victory lane the 500. Fans would tear down the grandstands. I also personally would not argue with Kevin Harvick or Jeff Burton.
I've heard many times that Dale wanted Burton to replace him after he retired.
