Jim Tressel confirmed Eugene Clifford's departure from Ohio State for Tennessee State on Friday at the Big Ten's 37th Annual Kickoff Luncheon.
"Eugene is a great kid and in my opinion he just needs a fresh start," Tressel said. "He's going to be fine and I'm hoping someday that we see him graduate. (He has) great ability. I think it'll be a very healthy situation being a little further distance from home in this particular case and hopefully good things can happen."
Clifford was dismissed from the Buckeyes after allegedly punching two employees of the Holy Grail sports bar while the employees were trying to break up a fight. He was also suspended from traveling with the team to the 2007 National Championship game after breaking unspecified team rules.
Clifford may have never gotten the chance to live up to his billing in his lone season at Ohio State, but at least he'll get plenty of opportunities to continue to play and get his life back in order at Tennessee State.
Clifford's departure will open up one more scholarship for Ohio State's already strong 2009 recruiting class.
