There are many rumours flying just hours before the NHL free agent period begins. One interestingly enough has the Leafs making serious offers for Paul Martin. Considering how stacked the Maple Leafs defense is why on Earth would they add another one?

The answer seems absurdly simple, if we deal Tomas Kaberle we will have to replace him and Paul Martin is ideal. He is a poor man's Dion Phaneuf, and we like the rich man version so much we gotta get him. So with Martin on the Leafs does it mean Kaberle is gone for sure?

Well with Martin on the Leafs Kaberle is most likely gone. The return on Kaberle would be a solid top 6 forward coming back and maybe a prospect, no other defenseman that is not untouchable can do that. However, with the way Brian Burke wheels and deals you just never know.

So if you see the Leafs sign Paul Martin you know one of the defenseman is on his way out, and that a Kaberle trade is very likely. San Jose is said to be very interested except they did not want to give up a certain prospect.

We'll see what happens as the day progresses, but do not think if we fail to sign Martin Burke will not trade Kaberle. If the deal is right he won't care about replacing Kaberle immediately, he just wants to upgrade the team.
