UFC: A Brief History of Unification Title Fights leading up UFC 116

UFC 116 on July 3rd will see the fifth Unification Title Fight in UFC History as UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar will face UFC Interim-Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin in Las Vegas.

When Shane Carwin defeated Frank Mir at UFC 111 to capture the Interim-Heavyweight Title it felt like he was the latest in a long line of Interim-Champions that we have had in recent times.

However a closer look at history reveals that we have actually had few Interim-Champions in UFC history and even fewer Unification Title fights.

With the Lesnar vs Carwin clash on the horizon let's remind ourselves of what happened in the previous Unification fights that have occurred in the leading MMA organization.
