Recent headlines of athletes being in trouble with the law regarding women is nothing new. But it seems that as of late, more and more athletes find themselves in bad situations when it comes to dealing with females. Some of these incidents have even turned deadly.
Here is a list of 10 athletes who have fought the law, and in most cases, the law won.
While playing for the New York Yankees in 1989, Polonia was accused of having sex with a minor. Unlike some of the other cases, the Polonia case seemed like a setup. At the time he was 24 and the girl in question told Polonia (according to him) that she was 19, although her actual age was 15.
Polonia spent 60 days in jail, paid a fine, and made a donation of $10,000 to a sexual assault treatment center.
The original bad boy of the Dallas Cowboys was Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson. All of his bad boy behavior finally caught up with him, when Henderson was convicted of sexually assaulting and doing drugs with two teenage girls.
Henderson spent some time in jail, and after his release, he turned his life around and now does speeches against the evils of drug use.
Another Dallas Cowboy who stayed in trouble was Michael Irvin. Unlike Henderson, who was convicted of his crimes, Irvin was never found guilty, but has been accused of rape and sexual assault several times. Irvin’s reputation as a party animal doesn't help his case and is probably the reason why he has been targeted by these accusations.
Lawrence Phillips has always been in trouble with the law since his days as a running back at Nebraska. Phillips has been accused of assaulting women in the past and has always gotten away with it.
Not this time.
Phillips' latest incident involving an attack on his girlfriend and him driving his car into three teens landed him 31 years in prison; a sad end for such a talented player.
Roethlisberger's actions over the past few months have called into question not only his reputation, but his judgment. Most people thought that after Roethlisberger was accused of rape, it was a ploy by the victim for money.
But when the second accusation came out a few months later along with the details behind it, Roethlisberger found himself suspended from the NFL and whatever was left of his reputation was torn to shreds.
Jim Brown is probably the greatest running back of all time, but his greatness has been overshadowed by his troubles in the past with women. Brown has been accused of assaulting women, including almost killing one of his girlfriends in a 1968 incident and leaving her for dead.
Although Brown has never been convicted, his reputation has been tarnished over the years because of these accusations and his actions.
If there is one athlete whose reputation has been ruined by his actions, it has been Mike Tyson. Tyson was accused and then convicted of raping a young contestant in the Miss Black America pageant. His career nor his reputation has ever recovered.
Although some thought the allegations were false and a setup, Tyson's subsequent actions before and after may have proven that his reputation was well-deserved.
LT has always had a bad reputation because of his past drug use; now add accused rapist to his rap sheet. Taylor has been indicted by a Grand Jury of the rape of a 16-year-old girl.
If convicted, Taylor can get five years in prison.
Rae Carruth played with the Carolina Panthers back in the 1990s and seemingly had it all. But Carruth had a dark side and that dark side showed itself on the night of Nov. 16, 1999. His then girlfriend Cherica Adams, who was several months pregnant with his child, was shot in a drive-by shooting after she and Carruth left a movie.
Adams said on her death bed that she thought Carruth was responsible for the shooting and soon after, he went into hiding. Later Carruth was found, taken to court, and was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.
Carruth was spared the death penalty and will be eligible for parole in 2018.
The Simpson case is probably the most famous case ever dealing with not only domestic violence, but murder. It was a known fact that OJ Simpson abused then wife Nicole Brown on several occasions, so when they found her and friend Ron Goldman’s bodies, Simpson was the prime suspect.
The case went to trial and Simpson was found not guilty, although many to this day believe that he did in fact kill his ex-wife.
