The US was facing a similar situation as in the first round.

With Ghana scoring on the fifth minute, the US had to shift into its uphill battle gear early.

Still trailing by one entering the second half, the constant US offensive attack culminated when Landon Donovan, hero of the last game, scored on a penalty kick.

It would remained tied until regulation.

In the first 15-minute overtime,  Ghana scored in the 93rd minute, springing Ghana to a lead that they would retain;.

Despite giving up a goal to Donovan, Ghanaian goaltender Richard Kingson is who really lead Ghana to advance to the final eight.

Kingson was able to fend off the US numerous offensive opportunities, coming up with five total saves.

This was the first time since 1930 that the US made it past the first round.
